Pui Kiu College Grade 11 Tung Chung Learning Journey: Caring for the Elderly, Experiencing Local Traditions, and Passing on Culture

To deepen students’ understanding of local culture and cultivate a spirit of community service, Pui Kiu College, together with the office of Islands District Councillor Mr. Jonathan Chow, organised a learning activity for all Grade 11 students and teachers in Tung Chung on 25 June 2025. The programme combined exploration of local heritage with care for the community.

Exploring Heritage and Visiting the Elderly: Fostering Humanistic Care

The visit began at the historically significant Tung Chung Fort, where students learned about its background through a guided tour. Students then formed groups to visit households in Tung Chung’s Eighteen Villages, undertaking the key component of the day—home visits to the elderly. Through warm conversations and listening to life stories, students learned care and responsibility in practice and experienced the spirit of mutual support within the community.

Experiencing Village Culture and Learning Traditional Crafts

In the afternoon, activities focused on rural culture and traditional craftsmanship. Students and teachers toured the Herb House at the Tung Chung Green Education Farm to learn about local medicinal plants, and participated in two workshops: hand-crafted perfumed lemon tea and traditional paper fan painting. Using perfumed lemons grown on-site, students prepared their own beverages and painted the scenic beauty and heritage sites of Tung Chung on paper fans, acquiring traditional skills through hands-on practice and feeling the vibrancy of local rural culture.

The group concluded the visit at Tung Chung Pier to experience the fishing-port ambience, followed by a tour of the Hau Wong Temple to further understand local folk beliefs and history. Through historical inquiry, community service, and cultural immersion, this Tung Chung journey provided a vivid lesson in local culture and life education.
